3) Windshield Wipers (3 of 10)
Windshield Wipers are perhaps one of the most important components of the car, since it ensures that the visibility of the driver isn’t affected in adverse weather conditions. Back in 1903, Mary Anderson, came up with the brilliant idea of windshield wipers, when she was on a road trip. She noticed that drivers had to stop and clear the ice and snow from their windshields, and that’s when she was inspired by the idea of a windshield wiper.
A rubber-blade that can be activated while driving and without having to get out of the car is an ingenious idea. In 1904, she applied for a permit and was issued one the following year, in 1905, but in the initial stages the windshield wiper wasn’t popular. Now it’s impossible to imagine driving anywhere without windshield wipers, and it’s all thanks to the ingenious thinking of a woman.
