Constantine Fahlberg accidently created artificial sugar, when he didn’t wash his hands before eating his meal, after he came out of his laboratory. The bread tasted sweet to him, even though it wasn’t sweetened bread, and even the napkin, with which he dried his mouth tasted sweet.

In fact, even his own thumb tasted sweet to him, and it quickly dawned upon him that he had created some sort of artificial sweetener. That is how the invention of saccharin came into being.
