Perhaps one of the greatest inventions in the world, Penicillin was created by accident by Alexander Fleming. He had been studying staphylococcus, and added bacteria to petri dishes before going on vacation.

Fleming had hoped that the bacteria would grow, but was surprised that there was mold growing in the dishes. He inspected them and found that the mold had released another product, which restrained the growth of the staph, and thus the first antibiotic in the world was created.
