In 1917, after a series of moves, Walt Disney and his family returned to Chicago, and he started his freshman year at McKinley High School. He also took night school courses at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts under the tutelage of Louis Grell. He became a cartoonist for the school newspaper, but eventually became so disgusted with the process of schooling that he eventually dropped out and tried to enlist in the army. Being too young, he eventually was able to join the Red Cross and spent a year in France driving ambulances.
