Born in Vancouver, his father was an American, and therefore enjoyed dual citizenship. As a child, he did not want to do anything other than pursue a career in comedy. As soon as he found out that you could earn money by being funny, he didn’t want to do anything else. He started doing standup comedy at the age of 12, and would play in clubs and bars. He co-wrote the Superbad script with friend Evan Goldberg when they were 13. Around the time when he was 16, his father lost his job, and his mother quit hers, but he also landed a role in Judd Apatow’s TV series Freaks and Geeks, playing a high school student. Despite being a strong student, he dropped out and his family relocated to LA, and he became the main family wage earner and paid all the bills.
