The youngest of six, the future Grease and Saturday Night Fever star grew up in New Jersey, in a predominantly Irish-American neighborhood, despite also having Italian-American ancestry.

He attended Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, NJ, but eventually dropped out to pursue acting, singing, and dancing in NYC.

His first roles included parts in the touring company of Grease, a bully in Carrie, and ironically a high school student named Vinnie Barbarino in Welcome Back, Kotter.
