Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Brando grew up in a tough alcoholic home, and much of his troubles began during his formative years. Moving from Omaha to Evanston, IL, then Santa Ana, CA, then back to Libertyville, IL, his parents separated then reconciled a number of times between moves.
Brando worked at the town’s only theatre as an usher, and used to imitate schoolmates and the cows and horses at the family farm to keep his mother from drinking. Held back a year at Libertyville HS, he was eventually expelled for driving a motorcycle through the hallways.
He was sent off to a military academy, where he excelled in theatre, but not much else. Through the acts of insubordination to a visiting officer and sneaking out into the city after hours, he was eventually kicked out of the academy as well, and despite being asked to return the next year, Brando decided to drop out for good.
