This movie is one of the most depressing movies ever made, but it is also extremely good. Nicolas Cage plays the role of Ben Sanderson, a screenwriter, whose self-destructive behavior causes him to lose everything in his life. The film revolves around his relationship with an abused sex worker in Las Vegas, whilst he is drinking himself to death.
Various sources confirmed that Cage would get absolutely drunk before shooting and would then record himself to review his speech patterns. His level of commitment to the role and drinking in particular was so great that he actually landed Best Actor awards at the Academy Awards and Golden Globes.

Must be pretty damn old if his book was written in 1906!
