One of the most controversial wins of all times was by Marisa Tomei, and a few people like to believe that Jack Palance read the wrong name out of the envelope because there was no way Tomei would have won an award. She had fierce competition that year with Joan Plowright (Enchanted April), Judy Davis (Husbands and Wives), Miranda Richardson (Damage), and Vanessa Redgrave (Howard’s End), which is the reason why everyone was surprised at Marisa Tomei’s win. The movies that she did later on did not show a single powerful performance.

You are completely wrong about Marisa Tomei….unless you thought her oscar nods for In the Bedroom and The Wrestler were undeserving to. And by the way, the oscar is awarded for a singular performance….whether or not the subsequent material is on par is immaterial.
