Hawking felt isolated during his first year at the university, and in order to overcome the feeling, he joined the rowing team. Hawking’s position was as a coxswains, which requires a person to control the stroke rate and the steering. Rowing was an important sport at Oxford, which is the reason why Hawking became famous and his fellow rowers started calling him “the adventurous type”.
