With time, Hawking’s motor neuron system started to slow down and he began tripping a lot. His family became concerned and asked him to see a doctor. Before seeing the doctor, he attended a New Year’s party where he met his wife, Jane Wilde, who was immediately drawn to his humor and personality. He turned 21 and was admitted to a hospital where several tests were run on him. He was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and was given only a few years to live. Hawking says that he was shocked and wondered why this happened to him, until he saw a young boy who had leukemia. He realized there were people were suffering more than him and became more optimistic. Hawking claims that his engagement o Jane gave him a reason to live.
