Betty Ford got married in 1948 to Gerald Ford. As First Lady she was very open about her private life and discussed her psychiatric treatment experiences openly. She was also very passionate and supported the legalization of abortion, and the Equal Rights Amendment.

Betty Ford also underwent mastectomy, and was a major advocate of breast cancer awareness in America. Due to all her efforts for women rights, she is considered as one of the most influential First Ladies ever.
