Thomas Sullivan inadvertently created tea bags, when he had the idea of sending his clients silk tea bags, instead of tea balls. He decided to dry the tea leaves in silk bags and had intended customers to open the bags and make tea.

However, customers began to directly dip the bags into the tea, and complained that gauze bags would serve better than silk ones. Later on filter paper bags were used as tea bags and that is how they have remained to this date.
