Over the last few years, Republicans have pushed to pass bills forcing states to administer drug tests on all recipients of public assistance. A few states complied, and all of them found the rate of drug use was incredibly low. In fact, several states said that drug testing applicants cost them twice as much as what they saved by limiting benefits.

The rate of drug use among welfare applicants was less than 1% for all but one of the participating states.
