Many of us love watching talented cheerleaders perform just as much as we enjoy football, basketball, and hockey games. Unfortunately, some folks refuse to recognize cheerleading as a sport. We’ve got 10 reasons to help change their minds, starting with the alarming number of concussions that affect cheerleaders.

The American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness reports that cheerleading causes 66% of all catastrophic injuries that affect female athletes. Notice we said athletes, not hobbyists…because cheer is definitely a sport.  

84% of these concussions occur during practices rather than games, which shows just how hard cheerleaders train to perfect their gameday routines.
