Whoopi Goldberg taking home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in “Ghost” in 1990 was a shock to many people. Considering the fact that she was facing heavy competition from the other nominees, which included Diane Ladd for “Wild at Heart”, Annette Bening for “The Grifters”, Lorraine Bracco for “Goodfellas” and Mary McDonnell for “Dance with Wolves”.
Goldberg managed to win the Oscar, on a performance that was entertaining but wasn’t spectacular. It was pretty basic and the majority thought that Bening should have won the Oscar that year.
