President’s Day was actually supposed to be a holiday that honored the first ever President of the United States, George Washington. It actually began on his birthday, after he passed away in 1799, and it was celebrated every year on the 22nd of February. However, in 1832, on the centennial commemorating his birth, it was celebrated widely, and also in 1848, when the Washington Monument was bring constructed.

However, other presidents also had birthdays in February, most notably Abraham Lincoln, who’s birthday was on 12th February, and with the passing of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1971, it was officially recognized as the day when all past presidents would be celebrated. It also became a symbol of patriotism throughout the United States.
