There was nothing that great about the ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’ and it did not deserve the Best picture award. The movie was directed by Cecil B DeMille, who is a legend, but this movie was not one of his masterpieces. Critics say that that the movie lacks aesthetics and is extremely long. Some of the more deserving movies from that year are ‘High Noon’ and ‘The Bad and the Beautiful’.

You are completely wrong about Marisa Tomei….unless you thought her oscar nods for In the Bedroom and The Wrestler were undeserving to. And by the way, the oscar is awarded for a singular performance….whether or not the subsequent material is on par is immaterial.
