What are the first words that spring to mind when you consider Donald Trump’s policies on immigration? Does the term “huuuuge wall” ring any bells? That’s right. This is one of key promises made by Trump who stated that, to make America great again, he would build a great wall between the US and Mexico and make the Mexicans pay for it.

Trump’s views on immigration have proved to be consistently controversial and deeply divisive since he embarked on his campaign. Among his other political promises included a ban on the entry of Muslims in the country until he could “figure out what the hell is going on.” On the issue of illegal migrants, Trump said: “Day 1 of my presidency, they’re getting out and getting out fast.”

Whereas both Trump and Cruz agree on deporting some 11 million illegal immigrants in the country, the major difference lies in the means to do so. Trump says that he is going to create a ‘deportation force’ that will round up and throw out all illegal immigrants out of the country while Cruz, on the other hand, rules out any such measure.

On the issue of Muslim immigrants, Cruz has treaded much more carefully than Trump. Rather than banning all Muslims, his policy proposal is to suspend the refugees, for a period of three years, from countries where al-Qaeda or ISIS holds a significant portion of the territory.
