All eyes were on Holly Holm as she landed straight lefts on Miesha Tate. It was round 5 of the match for the Women’s Bantamweight Championship at UFC 196. A few seconds later, Tate had Holm under control by a rear waistlock. Two minutes to go. Tate locked up the rear-naked choke. Ninety seconds to go. Holm went to sleep and the match ended with a technical submission. It happened. And it was glorious. Tate – the underdog in the fight – emerged as the new champion.
This is the first UFC title for Tate who seems to be at the top of her game right now. This is the leading reason why she wants to fight with Ronda Rousey. Tate didn’t seem to have luck against Rousey in their previous two encounters, or maybe she didn’t have enough skill. But this time it’s different. The Tate who faced Rousey in the previous two matches is not the Tate we see today. She is better skilled, better prepared, and more confident this time around. She acknowledged that herself when she told TMZ Sports that she was “on top of the world” after her long-awaited title win.
