Dolley Madison married James Madison in 1794. She was well known for her social graces and was one of the most loved First Ladies. She was very active in entertaining dignitaries, and creating weekly social events.

During the War of 1812, after the British burned down the White House, she saved many of the national treasures that are housed in the White House, including a classic portrait of George Washington. She also helped to refurnish the White House when it was reconstructed.
