The Monty Python funnyman was born into a family of modest means, but English families strive to provide the best education and opportunities for their children, and thus John was sent off to private schools and tutors. He did well in both sports and academics, but ultimately fell in love with all things comedic. Attending Cambridge to study law, much of his time was devoted to the university’s Footlights group, a legendary comedy troupe that John himself wrote for and performed in. Cambridge Circus was his biggest success after meeting future fellow Monty Python member and co-founder Graham Chapman.
