Amanda Nunes was only 4 years old when she began training for a career in MMA in Brazil. Most kids are playing with action figures at that age, but not Nunes, who had this to say about life in her hometown as a kid: “It’s a very simple life. Just the basic necessities. Family and God played a very big part of my upbringing.”

She started boxing when she was 16, and her sister then invited her to a jiu-jitsu dojo, where she trained and got her nickname the “Lioness”, as the gym’s logo had a lion on it.
