According to several critics, Fleming did not deserve the award of the best director because he was not the only director of the movie and also because the movie did not do justice to the book. Instead of Fleming, it could have been William Wyler for the Wuthering Heights.
You are completely wrong about Marisa Tomei….unless you thought her oscar nods for In the Bedroom and The Wrestler were undeserving to. And by the way, the oscar is awarded for a singular performance….whether or not the subsequent material is on par is immaterial.
