The population of non-white voters in California in 2012 was 45%. From 1952 to 1988, California leaned towards the Republican Party with the exception being the election of 1964 when the state voted for Lyndon Johnson. Donald Trump, knowing this fact, wants to remind Californians of the golden days when the state voted in the favor of the Republican Party.

Even though Trump can fight to win the state back, it is highly unlikely the state will vote for him, as it has voted Democrat since 1992. However, the state has a lot of diversity, as 37% of non-white voters voted in 2008 and 45% voted in 2012.
