It is a little hard to believe but the brilliant Hawking was an average student in school. According to several sources, when he was 9 years old, his grades were the worst in his entire class. He put in a little effort and his grades became average. However, he was always interested to learn how things worked because as a child he used to pull apart clocks and radios in order to study their mechanisms. Despite his bad grades, his teachers were sure that Hawking’s mind was brilliant, which is why he was known as ‘Einstein’. He got an almost perfect score in the physic’s exam and got a scholarship to Oxford.
