March Madness started only with 8 teams in 1939 and the budget of the tournament was $2,500. The teams gradually expanded over the years and finally reached the number of 68 which is the current number of teams playing in the 2016 NCAA tournament. The number of teams was expanded to 16, then 64 and finally in 2011 to 68.
