Director and Creator George Lucas wanted Orson Welles to voice Darth Vader, but decided against it, as Welles has a very recognizable voice.

As you know, the rest is history as actor James Earl Jones provided his voice for the character. A fun fact is that the actor refused to take credit for it, telling the moviemakers to leave his name out of the credits, as he had only a minor role.
