It may seem like a million years ago, due to his recent struggles, but Tiger Woods was the Godfather of the game of golf. He ruled the sport so dominantly that the Masters committee at the famous Augusta National had to make serious changes to their iconic golf course.
This was brought about due to Tiger’s dominating and devastating performances in 1997 and 2001, and Woods lapped the entire field in 1997 to go on and win by a 12-stroke margin. The course had to undergo what became known as ‘Tiger-proofing’, and it resulted in increasing yards to the course, planting trees on the fairways and narrowing them, whilst allowing the rough to be overgrown.
It did little to stop his dominance at the Masters, since he went on to win on 2 more occasions after ‘Tiger-proofing’, and players on the PGA Tour complained that the changes only made the course even harder for them. Frankly, no other golfer in history can claim that their dominance forced an entire course to be changed for them, and they still won on it.
